Embracing the Digital Mat: Your Guide to Virtual Yoga Classes

Welcome to the World of Virtual Yoga!
Hello, yogis! Whether you’re a seasoned student or just beginning your yoga journey, I’m thrilled to guide you through the world of virtual yoga. As a professional yoga instructor who has been teaching Virtual Yoga since before it was cool and the owner of Vallarta Breeze Yoga, I’ve seen firsthand how online yoga sessions can transform lives. Today, we’ll explore the benefits, options, and tips for making the most of your virtual yoga experience.
Our Journey with Virtual Yoga
It all started in a school gym.
At Vallarta Breeze Yoga, we began teaching virtual yoga in April 2019. Back then, it was a new idea. Instead of everyone joining from home, we met virtually in places like the Rosholt SD high school gym and a Minnesota firehouse. This allowed us to bring yoga to communities without it.

Lockdown – The World’s Introduction to Virtual Everything
In March of 2020, everything changed. Due to Covid lockdowns, our groups couldn’t meet in community spaces. For the first time, people had to join from home. I thought we would lose many students because using video calls was still new for most people. But we were surprised! About 70% of our students continued, and we even got new ones. With public yoga spaces closed, people looked for other ways to practice. We were happy to help! The pandemic lasted so long though that the community groups didn’t come back. But we still have a few virtual students from those early days, and we cherish those memories.

The Hybrid Model
The lockdown experience really changed our yoga business. First, it made us go 100% virtual. Then, it showed us the health issues with public group classes. I’ve never liked breathing other people’s air during class. Now, we knew it wasn’t healthy either. People need airflow and space. So, we decided not to reopen our physical space until we could make it healthier.
Since we were starting from scratch, we built the studio to work for both in-person and virtual classes. Now, it’s common for us to teach in the studio while virtual students join on a big screen. The teacher’s microphone works for both the virtual students and the studio sound system. This setup also lets people in Puerto Vallarta have their friends and family join classes virtually. It’s a truly unique experience!

Creating Your Virtual Studio
Setting up a dedicated space for your virtual yoga practice can enhance your experience. Here are some tips:

- Stable Internet Connection: Ensure you have a reliable internet connection.
- Proper Equipment: Use a good quality camera and microphone if possible.
- Device Setup: Make sure the camera is far enough away from you to capture your whole body when standing.
- Quiet Space: Find a quiet, comfortable space for your practice. Find a room or corner where you won’t be disturbed.
- Set the Mood: Use candles, incense, or soft lighting to create a calming atmosphere.
